Universal’s harrowing, heartfelt film Lone Survivor tells the true story of Marcus Luttrell, a Navy SEAL who faced extraordinary odds when his team was attacked by Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. He lived to tell his story and, with a best-selling book and now a movie, is helping to keep the memory of his fallen comrades alive. So when USA Network asked us to cut a series of spots featuring interview footage of Marcus Luttrell, director Peter Berg, and the stars of the film (Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, and Eric Bana), we knew we’d have to put aside our love of USA’s snarky tone and dig into the deep, complex emotions of the material.
After USA provided us with the footage of the round table discussion, we got busy transcribing and assembling paper cuts. Working closely with our USA client, we whittled our scripts down to the most powerful, inspiring moments and then jumped right into the edit. The spots came together quickly, and with some helpful feedback from Universal, we had a series of vignettes filled with real, heartfelt stories from some of today’s biggest movie stars. We were proud to be able to accurately show just how humble these celebrities were in the presence of a real-life hero.
A final color correct helped to unify the footage from this five-camera shoot, giving it a washed-out look to heighten the drama, while flesh tones were maintained, giving the spots a bit of warmth.
