Malakai, an afro-futurist and world-building director, emerges as a trailblazing force in the realm of storytelling. With a mission to reshape the narratives of the black diaspora, she draws inspiration from her desert origins and an unwavering connection to Afro-futurist culture within fantasy, science fiction and ancestral themed horror.

Her creative journey takes her to prestigious platforms like HBO, Netflix, and collaborations with luminaries such as Yvonne Oriji and The Late David Arnold.  Notably, her touch extends even to narratives such as Netflix’s ‘In The Dark’ series. Her influence also extends to reshaping LGBTQ+ representation on television, notably directing pivotal episodes of Lena Waithe’s ‘Twenties,’ a tapestry of diversity, love, and growth.

A beacon of brilliance, Malakai’s legacy illuminates pathways for generations to come. Her short films Souls has captivated  audiences at renowned festivals like Sundance, ABF, PAFF, and Cannes, casting an enchanting spell that challenges conventions on black womanhood and death.

As the driving force and founder behind Made In Her Image (MIHI), she empowers young creators of color, forging equitable collaborations with industry giants like A24 and Panavision to amplify her mission.

Malakai’s commitment to equity and education earned Made In Her Image  the SXSW 2020 Community Service Award. Adorned with accolades such as being a 2023 Project Greenlight Finalist,  an AT&t Hello Lab Director, The Sundance Horizon Award and the Contemporary Forum Artist Award, her work delves into themes of mortality and black identity.
